San Juan County Sheriff’s Office

A new K9 drug detection unit, funded by the San Juan Clean Energy Foundation, is helping the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office combat drug trafficking, improve public safety and strengthen community relationships through school and community outreach.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office received a grant from the San Juan County Clean Energy Foundation to establish a K9 drug detection program that enhances public safety and helps reduce drug trafficking and drug abuse in the region. Grant funding supported the purchase of the K9, essential equipment, and eight weeks of specialized narcotics detection training in Salt Lake City for both the dog and the Sheriff’s Deputy.

Since completing training five months ago, the K9 has successfully detected 123 pounds of illegal substances. The program has helped reduce the time needed to search vehicles for contraband and has improved safety for officers and residents. This work is especially important along transportation corridors where trafficking activity is most common.

The K9 program is also strengthening community trust. Deputies and the K9 have visited local elementary schools to demonstrate how trained working animals help keep the community safe. Students learn about the K9’s role, the importance of staying drug-free, and how they can support a safer community. These outreach efforts are fostering positive relationships between students and law enforcement.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is grateful for the Foundation’s support, which has already contributed to meaningful improvements in public safety.
